"Halawa" is a traditional Egyptian sugar wax, like a depilatory cream. You can do it by yourself in a couple of minutes!
Ingredients:
3 glasses of sugar
1 glass of water
1/2 cup of lemon juice
Make the wax
- Put sugar into water and let it boil, remember to mix all the time with a wooden spoon
- When it has melted, add the lemon juice;
- Don't stop stirring to prevent the mixture from sticking until it becomes honey-colored. Once you reach the color remove from heat and let stand.
Use the wax
After waxing you can gently wipe the shaved zone with half lemon to smooth and make a slowly regrowth. The wax can be preserved for a long time (I preserve it for 5 months). Before using Halawa, I just leave it in the sun for no more than 3 minutes, than I take a spatula, so I scrap the softer part of the wax and apply it.
NB: I recommend to be careful when sugar is boiling for two reasons:
- the color of the wax takes a little bit before it becomes honey-colored so take a white saucer and place one drop every one or two minutes to verify the color.
- The sugar can be really dangerous, so please be really carefull when you manage it!
TIP
If the wax becomes too brune it is unusable as a wax but adding a little bit of peanuts or roasted almonds you will make delicious biscuits! Remind to stop cooking when the sugar becomes honey-colored, this is essential for the success of the wax.
I opened my first Blog on 2011 'cause of this recipy: I started to use this cream a couple of months before and when i needed to do a new Halawa cream I lost the recipy. After two days i founded it wedged between 2 desk drawers so I opened a Blog to save this precious thing. Now I've decided to translate it in English because a lot of friends from Europe, Usa and other countries aked it to me. This is It!
